About G.A.B. Safaris
...
Welcome to the natural world of Great
Australian Bight Safaris. Based in Pt Lincoln on South Australia's beautiful
Eyre Peninsula, Great Australian Bight Safaris offers the visitor a chance to
see some of Australia's best natural areas ... just contact

The wind blows through my hair as the
pressures of the modern world fade away. The four wheel drive heads
down a narrow bush track. My senses are soon filled with an
abundance of natural delights. |
Kangaroos and a flock of emus feeding
in a clearing, an endless variety of wildflowers, spectacular coastal
views. An overwhelming sense of exploration and wonder as we travel
deeper into this bushland paradise. What other natural delights
lie further ahead? |
|
I can sense the
promise of the day ahead, as we pass a vast windswept expanse of
dunes. We journey back into history's treasure trove, exploring
rich Aboriginal and European culture, then pause for a relaxing
lunch in an isolated, unspoilt wilderness setting. Perhaps the chance
to catch a fish or two for dinner.. We might encounter a sea-lion
basking on a remote beach, or catch a glimpse of a rare sea eagle
or osprey cruising above us. |
|
|
The rich ruby sunset bids us farewell as the shadows grow longer and we reluctantly head for home. Kangaroos emerge from their bush retreats to feed on grassy flats. A chorus of bush songbirds signal the days end. Time to review the highlights of the day as we near the bitumen road, and the outside world! |

About G.A.B.S.
Great Australian Bight Safaris
(GABS) was formed in 1986 to allow those looking for more than
a resort or tourist attraction to discover the beauty of the western half of
South Australia. This spectacularly beautiful, rugged and relatively untouched
area has the best remote natural eco-tourism in the country. Perhaps an
overused term, but it really has been "a best kept secret". We
were the first to offer these services in the region, and we continue to be
a leading South Australian regional tourism provider. We proud ourselves in
being able to maintain a level of "Accreditations".
On extended camping trips we tow a purpose-built trailer which provides all the equipment we might need. It includes large 2 person tents [9ft x 9ft (3m x 3m)] with a head clearance of 8ft. Customers can select from a camp stretcher or air mattress for their bed and we provide sleeping bags that are wide, long and warm. And of course if you want to bring your own bedding, or sleep beneath the clear outback skies in a 'swag', that is okay with us. Our bathroom facilities even include an electric shower! many other operators do not have.
Accompanied by an experienced guide, and in small groups, you can view Southern Right Whales at their winter breeding grounds, have a four wheel drive adventure, perhaps take a walk on a remote and unspoilt beach, or 'tag along' in your own (high-clearance) four-wheel drive vehicle.
Over the years our tours have featured in many places including "The Great Outdoors", "Getaway", & "Postcards".
Steve Pocock is also an EcoGuide certified with EcoTourism Australia, which is another added benefit to those travelling with Great Australian Bight Safaris.
Our day tours cover a large range of interests and cater for different tastes. There are significant seasonal variations, for example if you wish to see wildflowers and animals, late winter through to Christmas (Aug-Dec) is the best. The coastal areas are most spectacular at their roughest and late autumn until mid spring (Apr-Oct) would suit this.
Those wishing to experience the best of 'Whalers Way' will need to be able to walk for several hundred metres over rough ground.
The Memory Cove 4WD tour showcases our spectacular coastline to those less mobile, and this tour is also an excellent choice if you wish to see our native wildlife, especially emus and kangaroos. This is an ecotourism Accredited Tour.
Our Lower Eyre Coffin Bay Tour is the most diverse, and is best suited to those who want to have a broad view of this region. This tour includes a short walk at the Koppio Museum.
Travellers on the Coffin Bay Peninsula 4WD tour will need to ensure they have no other arrangements on that day. This is a long trip and we do cross some areas that can be cut off by the tides which may delay the return trip. This is an EcoTourism Accredited Tour.
The Wildlife at Sunset tour will start in the early evening during summer daylight saving time (Dec-Mar) and we may return as late as midnight. This is an excellent opportunity for those who have not seen kangaroos in big numbers, but during winter months the tour will be subject to other tours. An all year round alternative is Nature In The Dark
Packaged Tours, like our Port
Lincoln Package, are designed to take advantage
of the wonderful islands and wilderness areas in the Lincoln National Park.
These tours include accommodation and meals. During summer spray
jackets or some wind protection is important, and don't forget the sun protection
(sun-block lotion, sun-glasses and a hat).

More about our tour arrangements..
Great Australian Bight Safaris always uses late-model air-conditioned 4WD vehicles,
generally Toyota, which can seat 6 persons. We cater for both small and large
groups, accessing extra vehicles when needed from Ceduna 4x4 Hire. We always
maintain a personalised service for our customers, and are able to get to areas
bigger vehicles would not be able to - and there are many of these in the region!
Many of the attractions we visit are within easy range of comfortable accommodation and we can cater for all customers needs. All accommodated tours are fully catered and we pride ourselves on being responsive to any special needs customers may have.
As you travel with us, help yourself to the comprehensive range of reference books to satisfy your interest in the local wildlife, history and geology. And our guides will be happy to share the secrets of this fascinating region with you. Our knowledge of the region is second to none, and yet there is always something new around the corner..
We can also arrange specialist tours with themes for bird watching, other nature interests, art groups, history groups and other outdoor activities. We have the equipment to take larger groups, and can arrange to have groups collected from or deposited at any location you wish.
In order to schedule a Day Tour, ex Port Lincoln, we need a minimum number of 2 persons. While we normally request 2 or more persons for extended tours, we can be very flexible! If there is a problem with departure numbers we will advise you well in advance. We are unable to depart for an individual under any conditions.
Customers are not asked to help with any part of our tours, but if you want to pitch in and taste every aspect of the experience, we won't stop you! If you or any member of your group has any special requests, just ask. We take great care to make your experience as perfect as possible - we want you to come back (A significant number of our customers have been on previous tours with us!)
For those wishing to take a single supplement on accommodated tours please contact us, as we do have a variation in rates on this, depending on the tour.
